Mate Rimac was born in 1988 in Livno, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and grew up in Samobor, near Zagreb. As a teenager he won international awards for inventions, and at nineteen he converted an old BMW 3 Series to electric power in a garage. The car set acceleration records and made his name.
In 2009 he founded Rimac Automobili. Its first car, the Concept One, was shown in 2011, when an electric hypercar from Croatia sounded like a joke. It was not: the company built a small series, and just as importantly began supplying batteries and electric drivetrains to established manufacturers.
The Nevera, launched in 2021, has close to 1,900 horsepower and has set dozens of acceleration and braking records. It is in this catalogue, along with its later R version.
In 2021 Rimac merged with Bugatti, with Porsche as a shareholder, to form Bugatti Rimac, and he became chief executive of the company that builds the Chiron — a Croatian engineer in his early thirties in charge of the most famous hypercar brand in the world.
He also founded Greyp, an electric-bike company later taken over by Porsche, and is among the richest people in Croatia.
